It’s no secret that the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor is one of the Truck Trend staff’s favorite dirt toys. A big key to the truck’s fun factor is the stupendous amount of power produced by its high-output 3.5L EcoBoost V-6, making a hearty 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque in this application. This higher level of power, combined with the new Raptor’s lighter weight, makes the Raptor a giddy joy to hoon in the dunes and dirt. There’s certainly no arguing about the effectiveness of the blown six for making power. However, the Raptors raspy exhaust note left some of the editors cold.

While the sound of beauty is in the ear of the beholder, almost to a person, each judge on our Pickup Truck of the Year missed the traditional rumble and burble produced by the outgoing Raptor’s 6.2L naturally aspirated V-8. To be fair, few, if any, six-cylinder engines sound as burly, authoritative, and aurally pleasing as a V-8. And in the development of the Raptor’s engine and exhaust, between power and sound, it’s clear which of those attributes took top priority.
